The noble Moctezuma Palace, full of history, beauty an early 19th century features, is located in the oldest and most noble part of Ronda, which was historically known as “La Ciudad” (the city). Del Gigante Hispanoarabic Palace stands opposite, and The Church of Santa María la Mayor and Mondragón Palace are situated in the surroundings, creating a Hispanoarabic environment where Renaissance and baroque supremacy and some Gothic remains are still evident.
Moctezuma Palace shows the typical doorway lintel with two coats of arms and a central anagram which reads “A. y M.” This feature is shared by numerous buildings in this part of Ronda and bears witness to the Aztec Emperor’s Heirs stay in the city: a symbolic link between the New and the Old Continents.
The current building is the result of the fusion of two existing premises and includes a neo-Gothic chapel as an annex and two patios. The main door is in line with a first rectangular patio with a skylight at its zenith. The second patio contains a lintel which connects two porticos at either side, whose prominent Tuscan columns stand on pedestals of considerable height and form balconies at the top storey. This patio serves as the chapel’s atrium and is characterized by a single nave basilican floor plan and a pointed arch which separates the presbytery from the nave and the choir. The façade facing the street is finished with a glazed circular opening inside the pediment, and a brick steeple with small pointed arches and pinnacles.
La remodelación del edificio se ha llevado a cabo con exquisita pulcritud y respeto; apenas se han cegado algunos balcones y eliminado algunos tabiques para facilitar la coherencia expositiva de la colección y conseguir al mismo tiempo una circulación fluida. El acristalamiento del primer patio ha permitido crear un hall distribuidor; y la desacralización de la capilla -que mantiene aún los restos de los Marqueses de Moctezuma- para convertirla en sala temporal y salón se actos del Museo. Al mismo tiempo, se han mantenido los artesonados, la antigua escalera y casi idéntica la distribución, respetuosa con la dimensión humana. A pesar de la estructura palacial, el itinerario puede seguirse con gran libertad. La heterogeneidad formal de las salas, contribuye al atractivo de la exposición.
